Innocent Until Black explores the vulnerability of Black childhood and the moment innocence can be overshadowed by the assumptions society places upon Black bodies.
Inspired by the artist's nephew Kalib, the work considers how a child who is known and loved as an individual can simultaneously exist within a culture carrying inherited ideas about race, danger, guilt, and innocence.
The work asks the viewer to confront the distance between who a child actually is and what the world may someday project onto him.
